What Is NSPA Individual Awards — Photo of the Year?
NSPA's current photojournalism competition is Photo of the Year within the Individual Awards. High-school categories are News Photo, Feature Photo, Sports Game/Action, Sports Feature, and Environmental Portrait. The student must be on the staff of a current NSPA-member media outlet, and the image must have been published in that member outlet during the cycle's eligibility period. Outlets—not unaffiliated individuals—choose and submit entries.
The 2026 cycle is closed. The $99 Individual Awards fee was paid per participating member outlet, in addition to annual publication membership; it was not a $15 fee per photograph. Payment closed May 27 and BetterBNC entry closed June 1 at 5 p.m. Central. Entries required JPG/TIF/PNG and a complete journalistic caption. 2027 dates, eligible publication window, fee, categories, and rules are not announced.
