picoCTF is Carnegie Mellon University's online capture-the-flag cybersecurity competition. In May 2026, the broader picoCTF learning platform became CyLab Security Academy; existing accounts, progress, achievements and history carried over. The Academy remains free and offers more than 500 challenges, guided learning paths, classroom tools and timed events.
Learners solve legal, sandboxed challenges by finding digital flags. Topics include command-line skills, cryptography, web exploitation, forensics, binary exploitation, reverse engineering, AI security and blockchain. Challenges range from beginner to advanced, and no prior cybersecurity experience is required. The platform is available year-round for self-paced practice, while the marquee picoCTF competition is a time-limited scored event.
