What Is Fairfax County Public Health Youth Ambassador?
PHYAP is operated by the Fairfax County Health Department, not CDC. The program gives Fairfax County students in grades 10-12 free training in community health work, opioid-use reduction, or young-adult mental health. It runs spring and fall cohorts, generally lasting 6-12 weeks. Partner-school students may take daytime Community Health Worker classes at Justice, John R. Lewis, or Mount Vernon High School; other eligible county students can apply for in-person evening or Saturday classes at the Fairfax County Government Center.
Participants complete curriculum developed with Morehouse School of Medicine and George Mason University College of Public Health, a required community health project, practicum work, and at-home health activities. Successful graduates may earn certificates from both institutions, a USD 500 gift certificate, and track-dependent supplies or a Chromebook. Mentorship and alumni resources extend the experience beyond the core course.
