What Is Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestras?
RIPYO is the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School's five-level, season-long youth orchestra program in East Providence. It ranges from Beginning String Ensemble for Suzuki Book 1-2 or equivalent players to an advanced full Symphony Orchestra for high-school musicians. Acceptance and placement are by audition; the public 2026-27 page also permits placement inquiries after the main audition sessions, subject to space.
The three upper orchestras rehearse Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.-noon. Intermediate String Ensemble meets 10:45 a.m.-noon, and Beginning String Ensemble meets 9:30-10:30 a.m. Symphony performs major symphonic works and an annual side-by-side concert with the professional Rhode Island Philharmonic; the other levels perform repertoire matched to their instrumentation and skills. The current school policy treats ensembles as a September-June commitment.
