What Is St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra?
The SLSO Youth Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble of roughly 100 musicians ages 12-22 from the St. Louis region and beyond. Members rehearse and perform orchestral repertoire at Powell Hall, receive coaching from SLSO musicians, participate in Peer to Peer mentorship, and may appear in other SLSO education and community events. The ensemble was founded by Leonard Slatkin in 1970 and has more than 2,000 alumni.
Applications for the 2026/27 season are closed. Every new and returning applicant paid a nonrefundable $30 application fee by March 31, 2026. Depending on instrument and applicant volume, a preliminary round used unedited audio recordings of scales and a solo; advancing and returning musicians then auditioned blind in person on June 3 or 4 with orchestral excerpts before SLSO musicians and the YO music director. The orchestra accepts standard string, woodwind, brass, percussion, harp, and piano instruments, but not saxophone or guitar.
