What Is Ron Brown Signature Scholarship?
The Ron Brown Scholar Program selects 20 Black/African American high-school seniors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and demonstrate academic strength, leadership, community service, character, and financial need. Each scholar receives $40,000, paid as $10,000 per year for four undergraduate years, for any discipline at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university. Scholars also enter the program's ongoing mentorship, leadership-development, and alumni community.
The historical 2026 competition is closed. The current 2027 scholarship application is open and requires the student application by December 1, 2026. Transcripts and recommendations are due December 15, 2026 only after the student has submitted; this later support deadline does not extend initial entry. No closing clock or provider zone is published. Standing guidance says applications are accepted after September 1 of senior year, but no cycle-specific opening instant is asserted. The current online application requires three approximately 500-word essays (the first two prompted and the third applicant-selected), a transcript, and two recommendations; test scores are optional.
