What Is U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps?
The Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is the advanced high-school branch of America's Sea Cadets. Eligible students in grades 9-12 wear uniforms, train with a local unit, develop leadership and physical readiness, complete online coursework and exams, and progress through ranks modeled on the Navy and Coast Guard. Experiences may include sailing, aviation, trades, small-boat operations, public safety, drones, cybersecurity, SCUBA, shipboard activities, recruit training, and leadership training. Participation does not require later military service.
NSCC entrants are generally at least 13 and must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents in good academic standing. Eighth graders may join after March 1 to prepare as rising freshmen. Local units typically drill one or two days per month and must offer 120 hours annually; active cadets may miss no more than 30. High-school cadets must complete at least one one-to-two-week summer or winter training each calendar year. First-year NSCC cadets normally complete a nine-day residential Recruit Training.
