What Is YouthBuild Local Program Leadership?
YouthBuild Leadership Development is one core element of a full local YouthBuild program, not a separately open national fellowship. Independently operated programs combine education, career training, support services, leadership development, community service, and alumni support. YouthBuild Global supports the network but does not directly enroll students or select participants for one national cohort.
In U.S. Department of Labor-funded YouthBuild programs, the primary population is opportunity youth ages 16-24 who left school without a secondary diploma and meet the controlling eligibility rules. Participants divide time between classroom education toward a diploma or equivalency and pre-apprenticeship work, including construction and sometimes healthcare, information technology, hospitality, manufacturing, or other locally offered sectors. Community service often includes constructing or rehabilitating affordable housing. Leadership work elevates youth voice, decision-making, agency, service, teamwork, communication, and responsibility.
