What Is Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program?
ASSIP is George Mason University's competitive, eight-week original-research program for high-school and undergraduate students. Selected interns work one-on-one with a faculty mentor in fields ranging from biology, neuroscience, chemistry, astronomy, climate and health to engineering, robotics, cybersecurity, machine learning, psychology, data science, and scientific entrepreneurship. Projects may be remote, in person, or hybrid, depending on the mentor. In-person research takes place at Mason's Fairfax, Science and Technology/Manassas, or Potomac Science Center/Woodbridge campuses and collaborating institutions.
The 2026 program ran June 18-August 12 and is complete. Interns worked about 30 hours per week, generally Monday-Friday within a 9 a.m.-5 p.m. schedule, attended a mandatory orientation and weekly training, conducted mentor-guided research, and presented a poster at the final symposium. All interns were required to enroll in COS 120: Introduction to Research, earning three graded George Mason credits. Participation without course credit was not available.
