What Is AWM Student Essay Contest?
AWM and Math for America run this annual worldwide writing contest to highlight the work and lives of people in the mathematical sciences. Middle-school students in grades 6-8, high-school students in grades 9-12, and undergraduates compete in separate categories. Each entrant conducts an interview with a woman or another person from an underrepresented gender identity who is working in or retired from a mathematical-sciences career, then writes an original biographical essay of about 500-1,000 words. The packet also includes a roughly 100-word student biography plus contact information for the student and interview subject. Entries are submitted individually through MathPrograms.org; homeschoolers and non-U.S. students are eligible. The current AWM page says the 2026 contest is closed and the annual portal will reopen in early November for the November 1-February 1 submission period. Winners receive a monetary prize, AWM membership, a certificate, and online publication; the grand-prize essay also appears in the AWM Newsletter.
