What Is Garden Apprentice Program?
Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) is a competitive nine-month urban agriculture and environmental education apprenticeship. Participants garden, grow and harvest food, study botany and environmentalism, teach children and visitors, create science or educational projects, and build communication, teamwork, leadership, and job skills. It is a March-November commitment rather than a summer-only internship.
New applicants enter by current grade: Tier 1 for grade 9, Tier 2 for grade 10, and Tier 3 for grade 11. Successful prior participation can also qualify a returner for the next tier. Tier 4 is only for applicants who completed Tier 3, including returning grade 12 students; new grade 12 applicants are not eligible. Gardening experience is not required, immigration status need not be disclosed, and every applicant—including returners—submits short answers and references and attends a group interview.
