What Is LLNL Biotech Summer Experience?
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Biotech Summer Experience is a free, competitive, in-person two-week research workshop, not a general national grades 10-12 summer camp. The completed 2026 session met at LLNL in Livermore on weekdays, July 13-24, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Applications and the session are closed; the next cycle's dates and rules are not yet announced.
The research centers on duckweed genetics. Students isolate and purify plasmid DNA, perform PCR, restriction digests, and gel electrophoresis, and analyze gene sequences using bioinformatics tools used by scientists. Resulting sequences are submitted to GenBank with each contributing student acknowledged by name, subject to successful work and repository processes. This is supervised workshop research, not employment, an independent internship, a guaranteed scientific publication, or permission to enter unrelated LLNL facilities.
