What Is Penn Biomedical Research Academy?
Penn's Biomedical Research Academy is a three-week, fully residential, non-credit Summer Academy for current 9th-11th graders. It teaches the experimental foundations of cellular, molecular and genetic biology through daily lectures and faculty research talks, daily small-group journal club, nine supervised wet-lab sessions and four computational biology labs using Python. Techniques include PCR, gel electrophoresis, restriction analysis, bacterial transformation and ELISA. It is an instructional academy, not an individual faculty research placement or guaranteed original project.
The completed 2026 session ran July 11-August 1. Its total price was $10,050 plus a separate $100 application fee; a $1,500 nonrefundable enrollment deposit was credited toward the total. Housing, meals, linens, facilities, supervision and activities were included, while travel, transfers, some materials, off-campus meals, medical and personal expenses were not. A limited full scholarship pathway was restricted to Philadelphia public and charter school students. No 2027 dates, price or application are yet published.
