What Is Iowa Young Writers' Studio?
Iowa Young Writers' Studio offers two separate ways to study writing. The Summer Residential Program brings students to the University of Iowa in Iowa City for a two-week core course, writing exercises, feedback and literary activities. The six-week online courses are asynchronous, with weekly assignments and discussion rather than live classes, and require about three to four hours a week. Applicants choose one offering; these are not compulsory parts of a hybrid course.
For summer 2027 residential study, applicants must currently be in grades 10-12. Sessions are June 13-26 or July 11-24. Student applications open January 25, 2027 at midnight U.S. Central Standard Time and close February 7 at 11:59 p.m. CST. Required materials include the course-specific writing sample, a statement of purpose and one recommendation. Residential transcripts are neither required nor accepted. The recommender's separate February 12 deadline at 11:59 p.m. CST does not extend the student deadline.
