What Is Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS)?
JSHS is a Department of War-sponsored, NSTA-administered original STEM research competition for students in grades 9-12 who are U.S. citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents. Applicants start with the regional symposium assigned to their school; online-school students generally use their residence region, and a Virtual Region also exists. There is no single national student application deadline. The 2026-27 rules say regional registration windows run from October through January, with exact deadlines and requirements set by each region.
A student submits one completed research investigation conducted within the prior calendar year. JSHS is an individual presentation competition: a team project must choose one presenter, who alone is eligible to present and receive awards. Demonstrations, literature reviews, and purely informational projects are not eligible. Applications use the region's Ideal-Logic system and require a maximum-250-word abstract, the current Statement of Outside Assistance, and a 5-20-page research paper when required by that region. A teacher, mentor, or school sponsor is not required, although human-subject, vertebrate, invertebrate, and laboratory work must follow the supervision and approval rules.
