What Is Summer Law Institute?
Legal Outreach's SLI is an intensive five-week weekday law program for New York City students who have just completed eighth grade. Law students teach criminal-justice topics, attorneys visit daily, students tour legal institutions, and each site builds toward a mock-trial competition before real judges. The program also develops critical thinking, writing, reading comprehension, public speaking, persuasion, advocacy, time management, preparation, and study skills.
Eligible applicants come from Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, or Queens. The application requires student and parent forms, an eighth-grade report card, two teacher recommendations, an information session, and a family interview. Successful completion carries an unspecified stipend and makes the student eligible to apply to Legal Outreach's separate four-year College Bound program.
