Med-Start Health Careers Program

# Med-Start Health Careers Program Med-Start, run by University of Arizona Health Sciences for over 50 years in collaboration with the Arizona Area Health Education Centers, is a six-week summer academic enrichment program that prepares Arizona high school students for admission to health professions programs. Participants live in a University of Arizona residence hall in Tucson from the beginning of June through mid-July following their junior year. ## What You'll Do - Earn college credit in three courses: a college-level English course, an introduction to college chemistry lab, and an introduction to college math - Attend professional lectures and take health-related field trips across the University of Arizona Health Sciences campus - Get hands-on lab experiences and explore careers spanning medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health - Live on campus under counselor and staff supervision with a statewide cohort of health-minded peers ## Who Should Apply Arizona high school juniors (attending the program as rising seniors) who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, one-year Arizona residents, and hold a GPA of 3.0 or higher; selection includes an interview. Applications are available from September through January and are due by February 1 each year. Program cost is approximately $6,000, but scholarships and University of Arizona tuition waivers are available. ## Outcomes Med-Start alumni start senior year with three college credits, a residential preview of university life, and a strengthened application profile for health professions pathways - the program's stated focus is improving competitive readiness for admission into health professions programs.
