What Is Shoals Marine Laboratory High School Courses?
Shoals Marine Laboratory offers immersive, residential college-level courses for high-school students at its remote field station on Appledore Island, Maine. Students live on the island, earn Cornell University credit, and study marine science through classroom instruction, laboratories, research-vessel work, and field observation.
The completed 2026 roster offered four-credit Marine Environmental Science in two-week sections and two-credit one-week courses in the Biology of Sharks, Skates, and Rays; Marine Vertebrates of the Gulf of Maine; and Scientific Illustration. Depending on the course, students deployed oceanographic equipment, sampled water, surveyed rocky intertidal habitats, observed seals, seabirds, and whales, studied marine-vertebrate anatomy, or practiced scientific illustration. Sessions ran from July 13 through August 17, 2026 and are now complete.
