What Is Summer Program Advancing Research Knowledge?
The record commonly called the Mount Sinai High School Research Program is officially the Summer Program Advancing Research Knowledge, Education and Development (SPARKED). It is a selective ten-month cancer-research internship for rising high-school juniors and seniors ages 16-18, not merely a six-week summer camp. The Tisch Cancer Center says it hosts eight students per summer.
The sequence begins with four weekly virtual preparation meetings, then a six-week in-person research placement at the Icahn School of Medicine on Manhattan's Upper East Side, followed by one or two afternoons of continued work each week from November through May. Summer participants choose either experimental-biology wet-lab research or bioinformatics/data-science dry-lab work. They read scientific literature, conduct or analyze experiments, join enrichment and well-being sessions, meet clinicians and cancer scientists, receive college/career workshops and present their work.
