# Museum of Life and Science Youth Volunteers The Museum of Life and Science in Durham, North Carolina welcomes Youth Volunteers ages 14-17 to support informal science education at its summer camps. Camps run late May through August at the 84-acre museum - and at a satellite site at the Montessori Community School of Chapel Hill - and youth volunteers work full camp days embedded in a classroom team, helping professional camp educators deliver hands-on science to younger campers. ## What You'll Do - Prepare the classroom each morning and help the Camp Educator and Camp Counselor with classroom management - Work directly with kids on experiments, projects, and activities across weeklong camp themes - Commit to full camp days, roughly 7:45 am to 3:30 pm, for each week you serve - Build teaching, teamwork, and responsibility skills inside a working science museum ## Who Should Apply Teens who will be at least 14 years old by the start of camp (May 26 for 2026), with experience working with young children and in positions of responsibility, the ability to work on a team, and an interest in science. All application materials are due online by early April each year (April 1 for the 2026 season); first-time applicants submit two teacher/mentor recommendations and interview with the Volunteer Coordinator, and returning volunteers receive priority. ## Outcomes Youth Volunteers log substantial summer service hours, gain classroom-style leadership experience unusual for their age, and get an inside track on the museum's education career pathways - strong preparation for future camp counselor and educator jobs.
