What Is Roger Williams Park Zoo ZooCrew?

The ZooCrew Counselor-in-Training (CIT) is a demanding unpaid education/camp volunteer role—not an animal-care internship. CITs support ZooCamp staff and campers ages 4-10 by welcoming families, modeling safe behavior, encouraging participation, helping with crafts and games, facilitating lunch activities and assisting groups around the Zoo. Staff supervise CITs and provide weekly feedback.

For 2026, applicants had to be in grades 7-12, remain under age 18 for the full June 15-August 21 season, have reliable transportation, and show interest in children, conservation and teamwork. Selection required a complete application, two references, a designed lesson, written responses, a group interview and—if advanced—a full Winter or Spring ZooCamp week as an immersive second interview. Accepted teens then attended four mandatory trainings and served four full summer camp weeks.
