What Is National Science Bowl — High School?
The U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl is a fast-paced team competition covering biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and mathematics. A school team consists of four competitors, one alternate, and an adult coach, usually a teacher. Coaches register their school in its assigned geographic regional, complete team and parental-consent materials after regional approval, and prepare students for winter competitions. The regional champion advances to an all-expenses-paid multi-day national event in Washington, D.C. with competition, science seminars, hands-on activities, and sightseeing.
The 2027 regional school preregistration route opened October 5,2026 at noon Eastern (16:00 UTC). Final team registration depends on the assigned regional event and coordinator, at least three weeks before that event. November 23 retains an approved school’s reserved Team 1 place; it is not a universal new-entry cutoff. Later team approval and national attendance confirmation are separate stages.
