What Is NSO Summer Music Institute?
The National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute is an intensive pre-professional program at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for serious instrumentalists ages 15-20 considering careers in music. The completed 2026 institute ran June 7-29 and combined private lessons and chamber coaching from NSO musicians, master classes, seminars, full-orchestra rehearsals and performances, side-by-side work with the NSO, and citizen-artistry development. Admission was based principally on musical proficiency, with essays and a recommendation also informing selection.
Every accepted full-time student received a scholarship covering $0 tuition, instruction, activities, triple-occupancy hotel housing, and local transportation. The scholarship did not cover meals or round-trip travel to Washington; limited need-based aid could help with those expenses. Applicants paid a $30 nonrefundable fee unless granted a financial-circumstances waiver. The January 30, 2026 application is closed, and no 2027 dates, fee, instrument list, or application rules are yet published.
