# Reischauer Scholars Program The Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP) is an intensive online course on Japan run by the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) at Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute. Named for former US Ambassador to Japan Edwin O. Reischauer, the program annually selects 25-30 exceptional high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from throughout the United States for a February-June term of lectures, discussion, and independent research on Japanese history, culture, politics, and US-Japan relations. ## What You'll Do - Attend ten virtual classes featuring online lectures and live discussion sessions with Stanford faculty, diplomats, and experts - Complete readings and weekly assignments (plan on 5-7 hours per week) - Interact with Japanese high school students in the program's exchange components - Produce an independent research project and give two community presentations ## Who Should Apply All current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the United States are eligible. The program suits students serious about East Asia, international relations, or diplomacy who want a selective academic credential without leaving their school. Tuition is $500 (covering books and Stanford Continuing Studies credit), and a limited number of full and partial need-based tuition waivers are available. Applications for the spring 2026 course have closed; the next cycle is typically announced in the fall. ## Outcomes Successful scholars earn Stanford Continuing Studies credit and a nationally selective distinction in Japan studies; top students are honored for their research, and alumni frequently continue into East Asian studies and international affairs.
