# Stone Laboratory Summer Courses Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University's island campus on Lake Erie at Put-in-Bay, is the oldest freshwater field station in the country - and every summer it opens its introductory college-credit courses to advanced high school students. Students live on Gibraltar Island, spend all day in the field and lab, and finish a one-week course with two transcripted Ohio State credit hours. ## What You'll Do - Take an immersive seven-day field course such as Aquatic Biology, Ecology and Conservation of Birds, Local Plants, Insect Field Biology, or Lake Erie Sport Fishing - Collect and analyze real specimens and data on Lake Erie and its islands - Live in Stone Lab housing with meals in the island dining hall - Earn two Ohio State credit hours per one-week introductory course, transferable to many universities ## Who Should Apply Introductory courses are open to advanced high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have taken biology; applicants use the dedicated high school application and submit a recommendation form from a science teacher or counselor. 2026 applications are open, with summer 2026 courses running June through early August. Tuition runs approximately $400 per undergraduate credit hour plus room and meals (about $650 per week before the 50% donor discount all 2026 students receive), and need-based scholarships are awarded annually. ## Outcomes Students leave with genuine college credit on an Ohio State transcript, field research experience most undergraduates never get, and a strong signal of readiness for science majors.
