What Is Boyce Thompson Institute High School Research?
BTI's annual internship places a small group of local high-school students in plant-science or computational-biology research at BTI, Cornell, or USDA laboratories. No prior lab experience is required. Interns work full-time for six weeks with a graduate-student or postdoctoral mentor plus a faculty mentor, complete a defined research project, attend weekly professional development and training, and present a scientific poster at the August Kohut Symposium.
Eligibility is unusually local: students must be current high-school students, at least 16 by the start, not graduating seniors, year-round residents of the Ithaca region or surrounding counties, and within roughly a one-hour daily commute. Housing, meals, and transportation are not provided.
