Computer Science and Informatics Summer Research Experience (CSIRE)

# Computer Science and Informatics Summer Research Experience (CSIRE) CSIRE is a six-week summer research program run jointly by Stony Brook University's Departments of Biomedical Informatics and Computer Science. Selected high school students join active research labs on the Stony Brook campus, working under the mentorship of faculty, Ph.D. students, and postdocs; the 2026 session runs June 29 through August 7 with 51 students participating. ## What You'll Do - Join a working research lab and contribute to a project in machine learning, data science, biomedical informatics, human-computer interaction, visualization, security, or related areas - Design experiments, write and evaluate code, interpret results, and present scientific findings - Attend research talks, career seminars, and social events with your cohort - Present final results, with strong projects continuing toward publication or competition entry ## Who Should Apply U.S. high school students who already have solid programming or data analysis skills - the program assumes real technical footing rather than teaching first steps. Applications for 2026 were due March 1, with initial decisions March 22 and rolling review afterward; the next cycle typically opens around December-January. ## Outcomes CSIRE students produce genuine research contributions that have led to publications and national competition recognition, including Regeneron STS, and may submit work to undergraduate/high school research symposia. Many continue working with their Stony Brook labs after the summer ends - one of the more direct routes from high school into university CS research on the East Coast.
