What Is Computer Science and Informatics Research?
CSIRE is a selective six-week Stony Brook University research program for high-school students prepared to contribute to authentic projects in computing, data science, biomedical informatics, engineering, machine learning, medical imaging, natural-language processing, human-computer interaction, systems, security, and related fields. Students join an active research group, design experiments, write and evaluate code, interpret results, attend research and career seminars, and present at a final symposium.
For 2026, applicants had to be at least 14 by program start, currently study and reside in the United States, possess solid programming skills and computer-science fundamentals, and commit full time. Mentors reviewed candidates for both overall strength and fit with available projects; each admitted student was assigned a mentor with the offer. The program offered commuter and virtual tracks, with no residential option.
