What Is Steven H. Strogatz Prize for Math?
MoMath's annual Strogatz Prize rewards high-school students who make mathematics engaging and meaningful to a general audience. Projects can use art, audio, performance, social media, video, writing, or another public-communication form. Judges look at mathematical content, creativity, and communication—especially whether a project gives non-specialists insight, surprise, or an “aha” moment. Traditional research papers are unlikely to succeed unless they work as compelling public communication.
The contest is worldwide and accepts individuals, pairs, and small teams. The last complete rules, for 2026, required every entrant to be enrolled in grades 9-12 or equivalent and to be age 15-18 on September 1, 2025. The 2027 application is scheduled to open September 1, 2026, but the new instructions and exact age anchor are not yet published.
