What Is TARGET Science and Engineering Program?
TARGET was a competitive, paid, six-week Fermilab summer internship for Illinois high-school sophomores and juniors interested in physics, mathematics, computer science and engineering. Fermilab's 2019 description says the programme combined work with hands-on experiential learning, prioritized increasing representation of groups underrepresented in STEM, and typically served about 15-25 interns. Historical programme documents describe supervised laboratory work alongside a parallel science-learning component.
TARGET was still documented through recent participant activity in 2024, but its former official webpage now returns 404 and Fermilab's current 2026 internship directory lists PRISM and VALOR JROTC—not TARGET—under high-school programmes. Fermilab has not published an explicit discontinuation notice located in this review, so the programme status is recorded as unknown and the portal as closed.
