What Is USGS The National Map Corps?
The National Map Corps is the U.S. Geological Survey's active, free, online citizen-science mapping project. Volunteers research, add, remove, update, and verify structure points across U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. Current structures include public facilities and recreation features such as campgrounds, trailheads, and visitor information centers. Work is increasingly organized through in-editor challenges. Accepted contributions support the National Structures Database, The National Map, and U.S. Topo products.
USGS says anyone interested may volunteer. It publishes no age, grade, citizenship, school, prior GIS, recommendation, fee, or annual deadline requirement. A participant needs an email address, internet access, an external sign-in option, willingness to read the guidance, and the care to research every edit. Volunteers begin as Standard Editors. After at least 25 unique points and a quality check, they may be invited to become Peer Reviewers; higher roles and badges depend on contribution milestones and quality.
