# Summer Home Repair Mission Trips Appalachia Service Project has been sending volunteer crews into Central Appalachia since 1969 to make homes warmer, safer, and drier for families living in substandard housing. The summer program is ASP's flagship: ten weekly sessions of hands-on home repair, staffed by trained summer center crews and organized around groups rather than individual sign-ups. Volunteers arrive Sunday afternoon, work Monday through Friday, and depart Saturday morning. ## What You'll Do - Work on one of five project types - roofing, drywall, siding, floors and foundations, or porches and ramps - matched to your crew's experience level - Serve alongside the same homeowner and family all week, so the relationship, not just the construction, is the point - Live at an ASP summer center in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia, with lodging, meals, and building materials all included - Take part in regional education about Appalachian history and the causes of substandard housing, plus evening faith-based programming ## Who Should Apply Youth groups, schools, and church groups whose members have completed 6th grade and are at least 11 years old; college students and adults also serve. Registration is by group: you need at least one work crew of 5-7 people, at least two adults age 19 or older, background checks for all adults, and your own transportation. ## Outcomes Crews leave with real construction skills, a week of sustained service with a single family, and a grounded understanding of rural poverty in Appalachia. ASP publishes scholarship information for groups that need help covering the cost.
