What Is Appalachia Service Project Traditional Summer?
Appalachia Service Project's traditional summer program is a one-week, group-based service trip repairing homes in Central Appalachian communities. The 2027 season offers eight Sunday-to-Saturday weeks from June 13 through August 7. Crews repair roofs, drywall, siding, floors and foundations, porches, or ramps, with projects matched to their experience and supported through daily ASP staff planning and visits. No construction background is advertised as a prerequisite.
ASP operates summer centers in 20-30 communities across eastern Kentucky, western North Carolina when served that year, northeastern Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and central or southern West Virginia. Groups request preferred weeks and locations; ASP assigns exact centers according to preferences and program need and says final locations are communicated by mid-April. Volunteers live in bunk-style summer-center facilities, work Monday-Friday, join regional education and evening faith-based programming, and leave Saturday morning.
