What Is Berkeley Pre-College Scholars Program?
UC Berkeley routes high-school students through Pre-College Scholars, not through one flat-price generic Summer Sessions program. The program has four distinct tracks: Residential, Commuter, Virtual, and Non-Credit Residential. Track choice controls housing, location, course load, immigration eligibility, activities, dates, and total cost. Most academic applicants have completed grade 10 or 11, have at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA, are 16 by the program's stated cutoff, and will return to high school; Berkeley also allowed some 16- and 17-year-old high-school graduates in its 2026 Residential track. Students already 18 use the separate Visiting Student pathway.
Credit-bearing participants enroll in eligible lower-division Berkeley courses and receive an official UC Berkeley transcript. Course delivery can be in person, synchronous online, or asynchronous online. Transferability is never guaranteed: the receiving school or college decides whether to accept the credit. Residential students also complete campus orientations and program activities; commuters must arrange appropriate Bay Area housing with a parent or relative, and virtual students need technology suitable for their chosen courses.
