What Is Exploratorium High School Explainer Program?
High School Explainers are the Exploratorium's youngest employees. Two cohorts—a summer cohort and a schoolyear cohort—fill more than 130 paid positions each year. Explainers engage visitors at exhibits, lead daily demonstrations, help operate the museum, and may provide multilingual support. The program combines paid work with more than 60 hours of training in science content, exhibit facilitation, career readiness, and youth development, including 20 hours before an Explainer first works with visitors. A prior science background is not required.
First-time applicants must be high-school-aged and 15-18; returning Explainers may be up to age 20. Candidates need to obtain a valid work permit, attend every required basic-training date, and work the full summer or schoolyear session.
