# Junior Fifes & Drums of Fort Ticonderoga Fort Ticonderoga's Junior Fifes & Drums is a corps of student volunteers in grades 6-12 who combine music with hands-on historical interpretation at one of the most significant sites of the French & Indian War and the American Revolution. Fort Ticonderoga provides free instruction, so no instrument background or prior musical training is needed to join. The corps rehearses on Saturday mornings during the school year and steps up to two to five days a week in the summer season. ## What You'll Do - Learn fife, drum, marching, and music reading through free instruction from Fort staff - Train in eighteenth-century trades including tailoring, shoemaking, carpentry, and maritime skills - Develop public speaking and interpretation skills working in front of Fort visitors - Perform in parades and special events and collaborate with the Senior Fifes & Drums - Work in the Fort's historic gardens and grounds as part of the interpretive program ## Who Should Apply Students in grades 6-12 with an interest in music and history who can reach Ticonderoga, New York for Saturday rehearsals and summer service. No experience is required, and the corps recruits on a rolling basis through an online sign-up form. ## Outcomes Members accumulate substantial volunteer service hours, real museum interpretation experience, historical trades skills, and performance credits - a rare combination for a middle or high school student, and one that scholarship committees for the Fort's own George C. Singer Junior Fifes & Drums Scholarship recognize.
