What Is Junior Fifes & Drums of Fort Ticonderoga?
Fort Ticonderoga's Junior Fifes & Drums is a year-round volunteer corps for students in grades 6-12 who want to combine music, public history, and museum service. No previous music or living-history experience is required. The Fort provides free instruction in fife, drum, marching, and music reading, along with exposure to eighteenth-century tailoring, shoemaking, carpentry, maritime trades, gardening, public speaking, and museum interpretation.
The core rehearsal is Saturday from 9-10 a.m. Summer participation is substantially larger: volunteers serve two to five days per week in rehearsal and historic trades, take part in living-history portrayals, perform at the Fort, appear in parades and special events, and sometimes rehearse or perform with the Senior Fifes & Drums. This is a continuing volunteer commitment rather than a fixed-date camp.
