What Is Japan Society Junior Fellows Leadership?
The Junior Fellows Leadership Program is a selective cultural-immersion and leadership exchange for U.S. high-school students in grades 9-11. The 2026 cycle combined New York orientation/pre-departure work, travel in Japan, a Japanese host-family stay, high-school and university exchange, meetings with leaders, basic Japanese instruction, cultural/historical visits and a comparative team project based on a UN Sustainable Development Goal. Fellows returned to New York for an August project presentation and networking reception.
Selection emphasized demonstrated leadership, academic strength, emotional/interpersonal maturity, adaptability and interest in Japan. Japanese proficiency was helpful but not required. Students nationwide could apply, with priority for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Applications were mailed as complete packets with two signed recommendations, transcript and two 500-word responses; finalists attended a group interview.
