What Is Keller BLOOM Program?
Keller BLOOM (Bigelow Laboratory Orders Of Magnitude) is Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences' long-running residential research immersion for Maine high-school juniors. In 2026, sixteen students from public, private, and home schools lived at Bigelow's East Boothbay campus from May 17-22. Bigelow provided chaperoned room and board, and the program was free. No prior research experience was required.
Students followed a complete ocean-science research arc. They learned field sampling and data-collection methods, used oceanographic equipment during a Sheepscot River estuary research cruise, spent multiple days in laboratories, and studied biological, chemical, and geological features of the marine environment. The 2026 cohort sampled four sites and investigated nutrients, bacteria/viruses, phytoplankton, zooplankton, pigments, and related indicators of ocean health. Participants synthesized and analyzed data, discussed research ethics and marine-science careers, and presented team findings to scientists, families, friends, and community members before receiving completion certificates.
