What Is Welch Summer Scholar Program?
The Welch Summer Scholar Program offers five-week residential chemistry research at six Texas universities. Applicants must be current sophomores or juniors at a Texas high school; previous participants are ineligible. The sites include Austin, Arlington, Dallas, Houston, College Station and Lubbock, so Austin is not the only location.
Applications for 2027 open in mid-December 2026 and close April 4, 2027 at 10:59 p.m. Central Daylight Time, with no extension. Applicants provide standardized test scores, a double-spaced essay of at least 250 words, a transcript and two non-family recommendations. Recommendations can be uploaded after the student submits, including after the cutoff, but late recommendations may reduce consideration.
