What Is Secondary School Field Research Program?
SSFRP is a six-week, in-person summer research experience based at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and nearby Piermont Marsh. High school students work in tiered teams with undergraduate mentors, a science teacher and a Lamont researcher. Teams prepare from scientific literature, plan field or laboratory methods, collect samples or run experiments, analyze data, create a poster and present at a final symposium.
The 2026 application closed March 2 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. A 2027 application window is not yet published. The official page requires participants to be at least 16 by the start and currently enrolled in high school or college.
