# Saturday Academy ASE Internships Saturday Academy's ASE program (Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering, now Apprenticeships in STEAM Exploration) has placed motivated high school students in professional research and engineering settings since 1990. Interns work full-time for eight weeks each summer on projects designed by their mentors at universities, research institutions, hospitals, agencies, and private companies across Oregon and Southwest Washington - including Portland, Eugene, Corvallis, Vancouver, and Bend. ## What You'll Do - Work full-time for eight summer weeks on a real project designed by your mentor organization - Contribute to active research - past interns have been listed on published research and helped design and test commercial products - Build professional skills in a working lab, field site, or engineering team - Present your work at the program's culminating symposium ## Who Should Apply Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in Oregon and Southwest Washington (or students who can arrange their own summer housing near a placement). Selection is competitive - roughly 400 applicants pursue about 70 positions, and a student may hold only one ASE internship during high school. Interns receive a cash stipend funded by mentor-organization contributions. The 2026 application closed March 6; applications typically reopen each winter. ## Outcomes ASE interns finish with eight weeks of professional STEM experience, a mentor relationship at a real research organization, a symposium presentation, and in many cases authorship or product credit - among the strongest research credentials available to Northwest high schoolers.
