What Is MathRoots at MIT?
MathRoots is a 14-day residential mathematical talent accelerator hosted by MIT PRIMES for high-potential high-school students interested in creative mathematics and problem solving. The completed 2026 cohort lived at MIT from July 1-15. The next application is not open; MIT says the 2027 form will open in early January but has not posted an exact date, deadline, or program schedule.
For 2026, applicants had to be ages 14-18, be U.S. citizens or attend high school in the United States, be current high-school students who would remain in high school the next fall, and demonstrate academic strength—especially in math. Rising ninth graders and graduating seniors were excluded. Students needed comfort with algebra, geometry, trigonometry, exponents, and logarithms; precalculus was strongly recommended, calculus was not required, and prior math-competition or research experience was unnecessary. The program strongly encouraged students who showed resilience, resourcefulness, and initiative in overcoming barriers to learning.
