What Is National Junior Firefighter Program?
The National Volunteer Fire Council's National Junior Firefighter Program is an umbrella supporting thousands of independently operated youth programs at local fire, rescue and EMS departments. NVFC does not place every student into one national cohort, set a universal schedule or supervise local service. It supplies starter resources, safety guidance, training links and the Make Me A Firefighter search tool; students apply directly to the department that operates the local opportunity.
Local juniors learn how emergency-service organizations function in a safe, supervised setting and help with nonoperational work such as prevention education, rehabilitation support, apparatus or facility upkeep, fundraising and communications. NVFC does not advocate minors performing operational emergency-response duties. Exact training, uniforms, insurance, attendance and permitted tasks depend on department policy, state child-labor rules and the student's age.
