What Is States' 4-H Short-Term Summer Abroad Programs?
States' 4-H sends American youth abroad for host-family cultural immersion, not a sightseeing tour. Participants prepare through a U.S. orientation, travel with adult chaperones who remain in country, complete an arrival orientation, and join the daily life of a volunteer host family. Destination programs may also include camps, group excursions, or language activities. No prior foreign-language study is required.
Eligibility and price are destination-specific, not a single grades 7-12 rule. Programs serve ages 12-18 depending on the exchange. A participant can travel after high-school graduation and before starting college but cannot be currently enrolled in college. Students do not need to be 4-H members when applying, although some states require membership before departure. Exact state, age-on-departure, maturity, school, passport, health, conduct, independence, travel, and family requirements are confirmed through the state coordinator.
