What Is Adventures in Veterinary Medicine (AVM)?
Tufts AVM High School is a one-week commuter day program at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine campus in Grafton, Massachusetts. It is not on Tufts' Medford/Somerville campus, does not provide housing and is not a residential summer internship. Current grades 9–12 may apply to the high-school sessions. The daily schedule is Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Students explore veterinary careers through classroom and supervised hands-on activities. The published curriculum includes animal-handling demonstrations and physical-exam skills, suturing, bandaging, X-ray interpretation, dog clinical-exam practice, medical-case teamwork, intubation and ultrasound in the simulation lab, anatomy and sterile-technique exercises, teaching animals, and tours of the campus hospitals and wildlife clinic. These are educational simulations and demonstrations; participation does not confer clinical licensure, independent animal-care authority, university credit, veterinary-school admission or an internship wage.
