# UNMC High School Alliance The High School Alliance at the University of Nebraska Medical Center lets Omaha-area juniors and seniors spend part of every school day on a working academic medical center campus. From August to May, students take hands-on, college-level classes taught by UNMC faculty covering topics such as infectious diseases, anatomy, and medical decision-making - while remaining enrolled at their home high schools. ## What You'll Do - Attend classes on the UNMC campus Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. - Take two classes each semester on alternating days, with Fridays reserved as Focus Days for group activities - Learn from UNMC faculty in health care topics ranging from anatomy to infectious disease - Build relationships with medical center scientists, clinicians, and a cohort of health-minded peers ## Who Should Apply Juniors and seniors at participating public high school districts in the Omaha metro area who are at least 16 at the start of the school year. Applicants must have earned a B or above in Algebra 1, Biology, a physical science course, and a third year of science, and must complete an essay, letters of recommendation, and an in-person interview. Admission is competitive: nearly 300 students apply each year for roughly 65-100 seats. ## Outcomes Students finish the year with accredited coursework taught by medical center faculty, sustained exposure to health professions from nursing to research, and a serious head start on health science majors. A select group of juniors is invited to return for a second year.
