Full Article

If you're thinking about a service academy, a summer program lets you see what cadet or midshipman life is actually like before you commit to a long, demanding application. The academies run short, intense programs, mostly for juniors, that mix classes, physical training, leadership exercises and time with current cadets.

These programs are competitive, and the windows to apply are short. Here's what West Point, the Naval Academy and the Coast Guard Academy have posted, checked on their official pages on September 26, 2026.

West Point: Summer Leaders Experience (SLE)

The Summer Leaders Experience is a five-day immersion in a West Point cadet's academic, military and social life, led by current cadets. It takes place the summer between junior and senior year.

  • Deadline: West Point lists April 15, 2027 as the SLE deadline for summer 2027. Applications are accepted from February 15 through April 15 of your junior year.
  • 2027 sessions: May 29-June 2, June 4-8 and June 10-14.
  • Requirements: you must be a current high school junior, a U.S. citizen, 16 by July 1 of the summer between junior and senior year, and have no serious medical issues.
  • How to apply: complete the first part of the West Point application (Step 3 of its Steps to Admission), then the SLE checklist inside it.
  • Selectivity: West Point says about 1,500 students are selected each summer, chosen on academic, athletic and extracurricular information from all 50 states.
  • Cost: $495, with need-based scholarships available and no application fee. It covers clothing, supplies, meals, lodging and instructors, but not travel to West Point. Transportation between Newark Airport and West Point is provided.

West Point also describes its average attendee, including SAT scores of 1200-1300 or ACT 26-30, a class rank in the top 20%, National Honor Society membership and varsity sports. Two details matter more than that profile: West Point says test scores are not required, and it tells students who don't fit every category to apply anyway.

Does it help admissions? West Point is direct about this: SLE "has no bearing on West Point admissions decisions." It does open an admissions file, it includes counseling sessions with the admissions team, and it offers training and advice for the Candidate Fitness Assessment, which West Point requires for admission.

Naval Academy: Summer Seminar

The Naval Academy Summer Seminar is a six-day session in Annapolis for current juniors. You live in Bancroft Hall, the dormitory every midshipman lives in, and take academic and leadership workshops. A typical day starts with a physical workout at 5:45 a.m.

  • 2027 sessions (Saturday-Thursday): June 5-10, June 12-17 and June 19-24. The Academy notes it can't move dates for students whose school is still in session.
  • Application: the opening date for 2027 is listed as "TBD." Selection is rolling; last cycle, all applicants were notified by April 24, 2026.
  • What you submit: your coursework and grades so far, plus an essay of up to 1,000 characters about why you want to attend, your extracurricular activities and any awards. Don't mail transcripts or letters of recommendation unless asked.
  • Selectivity: the Academy calls it highly competitive, with about 800 spaces per session.
  • Criteria: a current junior with strong grades, achievement in athletics and extracurricular activities, physically fit and in good health, and unmarried, not pregnant and with no legal obligation to support a child or other person.
  • Citizenship: not required for Summer Seminar, but you need a Social Security number to apply. Candidates for appointment to the Academy itself must be U.S. citizens by the time they enter.
  • Cost: a $575 program fee covering lodging, meals and all clothing worn. Travel to Annapolis, or to Baltimore Washington International Airport where buses meet out-of-area students, is on you.

The Academy also says your Summer Seminar application serves as a preliminary application to the Naval Academy, which you complete before or during senior year.

Naval Academy: Summer STEM

Younger students have an option too. The Naval Academy Summer STEM program is for students entering 9th through 11th grade, with faculty-led STEM modules in the Academy's labs and classrooms, led alongside midshipmen.

  • 2027 sessions: June 7-12, June 14-19 and June 21-25. Sessions vary by grade, and you may only attend the session for your grade.
  • Cost: a $750 program fee that includes transportation between BWI Airport and the Academy, meals and lodging.
  • Application: 2026 applications are closed and the 2027 opening date is listed as "TBD."

Coast Guard Academy: AIM

The Coast Guard Academy's Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) is a one-week summer program exclusively for students entering their senior year. The Academy says AIM "is regarded as the most realistic of the service academy summer orientation programs": six nonstop days of early mornings, study and competition.

The Academy's AIM timeline lists these steps (the page gives days, not a year, so confirm them when the application opens):

WhenWhat
Early FebruaryApplication opens
April 1Application closes
May 1Selection decisions released
May 15Scholarship application deadline
May 29Tuition and medical clearance form due

Cost: tuition for the in-person Sessions I-III is $750, and Session IV, which is virtual, is free. Participants also pay their own travel and spending money; the Academy suggests $25-$50 for snacks and souvenirs. The Academy's own advice is to apply online by April 1 of your junior year.

What About the Air Force and Merchant Marine Academies?

Both list summer programs for high school students in our catalog (the Air Force Academy Summer Seminar and the Merchant Marine Academy AIM Program), but their admissions sites were down for maintenance or blocked when we checked on September 26, 2026. We haven't quoted their details here; check their official pages directly before you plan around them.

How to Prepare a Strong Application

  • Mark the windows now. SLE opens February 15 and AIM opens in early February, both during junior year. Put them in your calendar before winter break.
  • Train before you apply. Every one of these programs includes physical training, and the academies weigh athletics. Start a steady fitness routine now rather than in May.
  • Write a sharp short essay. The Naval Academy gives you 1,000 characters, about one paragraph, to explain why you want to attend and what you've done. Our guide to summer program essays has tips on writing to a limit.
  • Show leadership, not just membership. Team captaincies, club roles and service projects are exactly what these programs look for. See leadership without a title if you don't hold an office yet.
  • Apply to more than one. With limited spaces at each academy, applying to two programs improves your chances of spending a summer week at one.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the West Point SLE deadline for 2027?

West Point lists April 15, 2027 as the Summer Leaders Experience application deadline for summer 2027. Applications are accepted from February 15 through April 15 of your junior year, and the three 2027 sessions run May 29-June 2, June 4-8 and June 10-14.

How much do service academy summer programs cost?

On the pages we checked: West Point SLE costs $495 with need-based scholarships and no application fee; the Naval Academy lists a $575 program fee for Summer Seminar and $750 for Summer STEM; the Coast Guard Academy lists $750 tuition for in-person AIM sessions and a free virtual session. Travel is generally extra.

Can sophomores or freshmen attend a service academy summer program?

Most of these programs are for juniors, but the Naval Academy's Summer STEM program is for students entering 9th through 11th grade, with sessions assigned by grade.
