What Is Argonne Exemplary Student Research Program?

ESRP is a school-team research program, not an individual internship. A high-school science teacher applies to form the school's single team, attends an August workshop, is paired with an Argonne scientist, and selects 4-8 students. The program is designed to enhance Honors and AP-level STEM classes across biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, environmental science, and related disciplines.

Across the school year, teams move through a genuine user-facility research cycle: develop an official General User Proposal, complete Argonne registration and training, design and prepare an experiment, work with scientist mentors, collect data at facilities such as the Advanced Photon Source, Center for Nanoscale Materials, or ATLAS, analyze results, draw conclusions, and create a professional poster for the Argonne scientific community. Every team must travel to Argonne at least twice—once to collect data and once to present—with additional visits or teleconferences depending on the project.
