# PathMaker Scholars PathMaker Scholars is Huntsman Cancer Institute's intensive summer research experience at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The program seeks to widen participation in biomedical cancer research - with particular attention to students from rural and frontier communities across the Mountain West - by placing scholars in working cancer research laboratories for ten fully supported weeks. ## What You'll Do - Commit 40 hours per week to laboratory research and program activities (the 2026 session ran May 25 - July 30) - Learn laboratory techniques and carry out a mentored research project at an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center - Live on campus, with housing and a meal plan paid by the program for out-of-state students - Present your work, with all conference expenses covered by the program ## Who Should Apply Advanced high school seniors and undergraduates interested in research, medicine, or science education - especially students from rural and frontier populations in the Mountain West. Travel support is available for students living outside Salt Lake City. Applications for the 2026 cohort were due February 1, 2026; the next cycle typically opens in the fall. ## Outcomes Scholars receive up to $4,000 for their participation, a summer of full-time mentored cancer research, and a network of Huntsman Cancer Institute scientists. The program is designed to prepare participants for careers in research, medicine, and education, and alumni frequently continue into the institute's undergraduate research pathways.
