What Is PathMaker Scholars?

PathMaker Scholars is a ten-week, residential summer research program at Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. Its mission is to expand participation in biomedical and cancer research, medicine and education, including students from rural and frontier communities in the Mountain West. Participants train in laboratory methods, work with a principal investigator and research team, attend weekly meetings and events, and present their work at a closing symposium. The commitment is approximately 40 hours every week.

The 2026 session ran May 25-July 30. Eligible high-school applicants had to finish junior year before the program started; college applicants had to be current freshmen or sophomores in good academic standing. Applicants needed an interest in health sciences and biomedical cancer research and had to commit to the entire session and campus residence.
