High School Journalism Institute

# High School Journalism Institute Founded in 1946, the High School Journalism Institute (HSJI) is the Media School at Indiana University's outreach program for student journalists and their advisers. Each summer, students from Indiana and across the country come to the Bloomington campus for week-long workshops taught in the Media School's facilities. Summer 2027 sessions run July 12-16 and July 18-22, and students may attend one session or both, staying on campus in between. ## What You'll Do - Choose a focused workshop - options span reporting and writing, editing, sports journalism, sportscasting, documentary filmmaking, and 360 journalism - Spend most days in small-group classes with individualized instruction, plus large-group lectures - Live in IU housing and join evening activities with student journalists from other schools - Build publishable clips and skills to bring back to your school's newspaper, yearbook, or broadcast program ## Who Should Apply Rising high school freshmen through rising college freshmen who work on (or want to join) student media, from first-time reporters to returning editors. Registration for summer 2027 opens in January 2027 through a two-step form-and-payment process; many schools send staffs together, and fees vary by workshop. ## Outcomes HSJI students return to their newsrooms with sharper reporting, editing, and production skills learned at one of the nation's oldest scholastic journalism programs, plus a week of college life at a Big Ten media school that also trains their advisers.
