What Is High School Journalism Institute (HSJI)?
Indiana University's HSJI is a five-day campus journalism immersion for rising high-school freshmen through rising college freshmen. Students choose a focused workshop, learn in small classes and individual coaching, attend large-group lectures, create portfolio work, and join evening activities with peers. Offerings span reporting, writing, editing, photography, design, broadcasting, sportscasting, documentary filmmaking, and other newsroom skills, depending on the session.
The announced 2027 sessions are July 12-16 and July 18-22. Current pricing is $585 for one residential week, including instruction, supervised housing, and six meals; $395 for commuters; or $1,240 for both sessions. A $75 extra meal card is optional. Need-based Opportunity Grants and a limited local Press Club grant can cover the five-day fee, housing, and meals, while rising seniors may earn $400-$500 IU attendance scholarships based on workshop performance. Registration is open, but no universal capacity cutoff is posted.
