# MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association, the scholastic press association housed at Michigan State University's College of Communication Arts and Sciences, runs a five-day summer workshop on MSU's East Lansing campus each July - the 2026 edition ran July 19-23. Students live in MSU residence halls and spend the week in intensive classes taught by some of the nation's best scholastic journalism instructors. ## What You'll Do - Pick a focused workshop class - news and feature writing, photojournalism, design, yearbook editing, broadcasting, and editorial leadership tracks are among the offerings - Work all week with your instructor and a small class toward publishable work - Live in a university residence hall with meals in the dining hall, getting an early taste of college life - Return to your school's newspaper, yearbook, or broadcast staff with concrete skills for the fall ## Who Should Apply Youth entering grades 7 through 12 - experienced editors and total beginners alike. Registration for 2026 cost $560 for students from MIPA member schools and $610 for non-members ($75 late fee after June 15), covering housing, meals, and instruction. Scholarship applications were due June 1, and MIPA's free SponsorMe crowdfunding platform helps students raise fees. Registration typically opens in spring. ## Outcomes Students come home with a week of intensive training, a network of student journalists from across Michigan and beyond, and stronger portfolios for staff leadership roles and journalism contests.
