What Is MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop?
The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association runs this five-day residential workshop on Michigan State University's East Lansing campus. Each student chooses one intensive course in reporting and storytelling, broadcast, sports media, digital/social media, print design, radio/podcasting, photojournalism, student-media leadership or yearbook development. Beginner tracks welcome newcomers; advanced tracks publish specific experience prerequisites.
In 2026, students entering grades 7-12 attended July 19-23, lived with at least one roommate in an MSU residence hall, ate in a campus dining hall and learned in MSU classrooms. Registration cost $560 for students from MIPA-member programs or $610 for nonmembers, including housing, meals and instruction. A $75 late fee applied after June 15, and registration ended July 1 or when courses filled. Scholarships, a reduced refundable scholarship deposit, SponsorMe crowdfunding and grants helped with cost.
